The 12 Islands boat trip is one of the most popular day excursions from Fethiye and has been a staple of the local tourism scene for decades. Despite the name, most tours visit between four and six islands and bays rather than a full twelve — the name refers to the scattered cluster of islands in the Fethiye Gulf rather than a literal itinerary. The trip departs from Fethiye harbour in the morning, usually around 10:00 or 11:00 AM, and returns by late afternoon around 5:00 or 6:00 PM, giving you a full day on the water.

A typical route includes stops at Flat Island (Yassica), Red Island (Kizil Ada), Aquarium Bay with its impossibly clear water, Camel Beach, and Tersane Island where you can see ruins of a historical Ottoman shipyard. At each stop the boat anchors for 30 to 45 minutes, giving you time to swim, snorkel, or simply relax on the deck. The water in these bays is exceptionally clear and calm, with visibility often reaching several meters deep — it’s some of the best casual snorkeling on Turkey’s southwest coast.

Lunch is included on most group tours and is typically prepared onboard by the crew. Expect a simple but satisfying spread of grilled chicken or fish, rice, salad, bread, and fresh fruit. Drinks are usually extra and sold from a small bar on the boat, though some operators include a limited selection. Vegetarian options are generally available if you mention it when booking. The overall atmosphere on group boats tends to be relaxed and social, with Turkish pop music playing and the crew encouraging a festive mood.

Group boat trips cost between 400 and 800 TL per person depending on the boat, the season, and what’s included. You can book through your hotel, from agencies along the harbour promenade, or online. For a more exclusive experience, private boats and gulets are available for hire — these typically start at around 5,000 TL for the full day and can accommodate small groups of 8 to 15 people, allowing you to customize the route and pace. Private trips are especially worthwhile if you’re traveling with family or a group of friends.

The best time for the 12 Islands trip is between May and October, with June and September offering the sweet spot of warm weather and fewer crowds. July and August are peak season, meaning more boats on the water and busier swimming stops. If you have the flexibility, midweek departures are noticeably quieter than weekends. For an alternative to the classic group trip, consider a sailing excursion on a smaller yacht or a dedicated snorkeling tour that focuses on the best underwater spots — both options are increasingly available from the Fethiye marina.
