Bursa does not have a commercial airport, so most travelers arrive by a combination of ferry and bus from Istanbul. The fastest and most scenic option is to take the IDO fast ferry from Yenikapi terminal (on Istanbul’s European side) to Yalova. The crossing takes about 75 minutes, and from Yalova’s ferry terminal you can catch a frequent BURSARAY-connected bus or a shared minibus (dolmus) to Bursa city center. Door to door, the entire journey takes roughly 2.5 hours and costs around 200-250 TL for the ferry plus 50-80 TL for the bus portion.
Another popular ferry option is the BUDO sea bus service, which operates directly from Istanbul to the Mudanya port near Bursa. From Mudanya, city buses run to Bursa center in about 30-40 minutes. BUDO schedules tend to be less frequent than IDO, so check departure times in advance on their website or app. During summer weekends both ferry services can sell out, so booking online a day ahead is strongly recommended.
If you prefer a direct land route, intercity buses depart regularly from Istanbul’s main bus stations (Esenler or Alibeykoy on the European side, Harem or Dudullu on the Asian side). The direct bus ride to Bursa takes 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic, which can be brutal on Friday evenings and holiday weekends. Major bus companies like Metro Turizm, Uludag Turizm, and Kamil Koc offer comfortable coaches with Wi-Fi, refreshments, and assigned seating for around 250-350 TL.
For those considering driving, the route via the Osmangazi Bridge (completed in 2016) has cut the Istanbul-Bursa drive down to about 2 hours from the Asian side. The bridge toll is steep at around 400-500 TL for a car, but the time savings are significant compared to the old coastal road through Yalova. Rental cars are available at both Istanbul airports if you plan to explore the broader Marmara region.
Whichever option you choose, arriving in Bursa is straightforward once you reach the city. The main bus terminal (otogar) is connected to the BursaRay metro line, which takes you directly to the city center in about 20 minutes. If you arrive by ferry at Mudanya, public bus route F/3 connects to the metro system as well.
