Pai is about 135 km northwest of Chiang Mai, nestled in a mountain valley in Mae Hong Son province. The road is famously winding — 762 curves through the mountains — so plan your journey accordingly.
Minivan (most popular)
The most common way to reach Pai is by minivan from Chiang Mai Bus Station (Arcade). The ride takes about 3 hours and costs 150-200 THB one way. Vans leave roughly every hour from early morning until late afternoon. You can also book from agencies on Tha Phae Road or through your guesthouse. The minivans are air-conditioned but the driving can be fast and the curves relentless — this is not a route for the faint of stomach.
Public bus
Slower but more comfortable, public buses depart from Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Station a few times per day. The ride takes 3.5-4 hours and costs around 100-150 THB. There’s more legroom and the drivers tend to take the curves at a gentler pace, which your stomach will appreciate.
Motorbike or scooter
Many travelers rent a motorbike in Chiang Mai and ride to Pai themselves. This is arguably the most scenic way to make the journey — the mountain views are spectacular, especially in the cool season. Expect to pay 150-250 THB per day for a scooter. However, only do this if you are an experienced rider. The road has steep grades, blind curves, and unpredictable local traffic. Make sure you have valid insurance and an international driving permit.
Motion sickness warning
This cannot be overstated: the road to Pai is extremely winding. Even people who never get carsick can struggle on this route. Take motion sickness medication (available at any Thai pharmacy) 30 minutes before departure. Sit in the front if possible, avoid looking at your phone, and keep the air vents pointed at your face. Bring a plastic bag just in case.
